It’s now a dream turned into reality for content creators in Nigeria and Ghana, who can earn money from ads on Instagram and Facebook. Until the change on June 27, creators in these countries couldn’t earn from Facebook unless their page was managed from an eligible country. Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, announced in March 2024 that this feature would be available in June. He mentioned that monetization wouldn’t be limited to Instagram; eligible Nigerian creators could also monetize on Facebook.
As of May 2024, Nigeria had over 50 million Facebook users, and Ghana had over 10 million. Creators in Nigeria and Ghana can now earn from Facebook through in-stream ads and live ads. These ads can run before, during, or after videos, and creators can choose where to place them. Earnings depend on advertisers and the number of views.
In-stream and live ads include pre-roll ads that play before the video, mid-roll ads that break into the video, image ads that appear below the video, and after-roll ads that play after the video. Creators can also earn from ads on reels, bonuses, and subscriptions.
In April 2024, Ghanaian content creators had to start paying taxes on earnings from platforms like YouTube, X, and TikTok. With this new development, creators earning on Meta platforms may also be taxed.
In March, Clegg said Kenyan creators could start earning from Facebook and Instagram in June 2024 if they meet the eligibility criteria. After a year-long negotiation, Kenyan creators will soon be able to earn from Meta platforms following a trial program.
